Frost line

The frost line is the depth to which ground moisture freezes in winter — about 36 inches locally.

The frost line is the depth at which ground moisture freezes during winter. In Chester County and Delaware County, PA, the frost line is approximately 36 inches. Footings and structural wall bases must extend below the frost line to prevent frost heave from lifting the structure.
