Compacted sub-base

A compacted sub-base is the crushed-stone layer beneath a patio or wall that carries the load.

A compacted sub-base is the crushed stone layer — typically four to eight inches — excavated into the ground below a patio, walkway, or wall and mechanically compacted. It is the most important structural component of any hardscape installation. Inadequate compaction is the leading cause of patio failure in Chester and Delaware County.
