Batter

Batter is the intentional backward lean built into a retaining wall to resist soil pressure.

Batter is the intentional backward lean built into a retaining wall, typically about one inch of setback for every foot of height. It counteracts the lateral soil pressure pushing against the wall face and is required for structural retaining walls. Without proper batter, a wall tends to bulge and fail over time.
