Segmental retaining wall

A segmental retaining wall is a mortarless wall built from interlocking concrete block units.

A segmental retaining wall (SRW) is built from manufactured, interlocking concrete block units stacked without mortar and held by their own weight, geometry, and — on taller walls — buried soil reinforcement (geogrid). SRWs drain freely, flex with the ground, and are a durable, cost-effective choice for grade changes. Walls over about four feet generally require engineering.
