How Long Does Patio Installation Take?

← All FAQs

Most residential patio projects take about 3 to 7 working days on-site once materials are delivered. Larger projects that combine several features — an outdoor fireplace, kitchen, steps, or retaining walls — typically run 2 to 4 weeks. We provide a project timeline before work begins and keep you updated throughout. Weather is the most common variable, and we never rush base prep to stay on schedule.

The Installation Phases

Knowing what happens each day makes the timeline easier to plan around. A typical paver or stone patio moves through these stages:

Layout and excavation. We mark the design, then dig out 6 to 12 inches of soil so there is room for a real base. Base building. We add and compact crushed stone in lifts and set grading that pitches water away from the house — the phase that determines how long the patio lasts. Setting the surface. Pavers or stone are laid to the pattern, then cut to fit the edges. Finishing. Edge restraint locks everything in, joints are filled with polymeric sand and activated, and the surface is cleaned.

What Changes the Timeline

Square footage is only part of it. Irregular natural stone like bluestone or flagstone takes longer to set than modular pavers because each piece is fit by hand. Tight site access, extensive grading or drainage work, and add-on features (steps, seat walls, a fire feature, lighting) all extend the schedule. A simple open backyard goes faster than a sloped or hard-to-reach lot.

Lead Time and Weather

On-site days are only the visible part. Before crews arrive there is a lead time for the consultation, written scope, design sign-off, material ordering, and any required permits. During the build, heavy rain is the biggest disruptor because it halts excavation and base compaction. We build that reality into your schedule and keep you posted.
