Polymeric sand is a jointing material for the gaps between pavers, made of fine silica sand blended with polymer binders. When it is swept into the joints and activated with water, the polymers set into a firm, slightly flexible bond that locks the pavers together. It is the industry standard for a properly installed paver patio.
How It Works
After the pavers are laid and the edge restraint is in, the sand is swept across the surface so it fills every joint to the correct depth. The excess is removed, and the patio is misted with water in stages. That water activates the polymers, which cure into a binder that holds the sand grains together. The result is a joint that stays put instead of loose, dry sand that blows or rinses away.
Why It Matters for Your Patio
The joints are not just cosmetic — in an interlocking paver system, they are part of the structure. Firm joints keep each paver from shifting and rocking under foot traffic and freeze-thaw movement. Polymeric sand specifically defends against the three most common ways a paver surface deteriorates:
Resists wash-out, weeds, and insects
Heavy Chester County downpours wash loose sand out of open joints; polymeric sand stays in place. The hardened joint also blocks the gaps where weed and grass seeds germinate and where ants tunnel and push sand to the surface. Fewer weeds and no insect mounds mean far less maintenance.
Standard sand vs polymeric
Joints filled with ordinary mason's sand typically need re-sanding every few years as it erodes. Correctly installed polymeric sand commonly lasts a decade or more before it needs attention, which is why it is the default on quality installations.
Installation Quality Is Everything
Polymeric sand only performs when it is installed right. The joints must be deep enough, the sand fully swept in and the surface completely cleared of residue before watering, and the water activation done in the correct amount — too little and it never bonds, too much and it can wash the binder out or leave a haze on the pavers. Weather matters too; it should not be installed right before rain. JHL Masonry installs polymeric sand as standard on paver patios and follows the manufacturer's process so the joints cure correctly.
